White House looks to protect U.S. financial systems from climate change risk

Eighteen. That’s how many billion-dollar weather disasters have already hit the United States this year. That’s on pace to challenge the highest number on record, just last year in 2020.

The cost of these climate-change-enhanced weather disasters hit taxpayers and companies directly, costing Americans $600 billion in physical and economic damages over the past five years.

Now the Biden administration is launching a roadmap to measure and mitigate the financial risks of climate change.

Maggie Peloso, an attorney who specializes in climate change risk management with Vinson and Elkins, joined Climate Cast this week to talk about it.
