For the Jewish community, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine bears a striking similarity to Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Despite Russia’s claims of “de-nazifying” Ukraine, the letter Z painted on Russian trucks, cars, and shirts has become a new swastika. Jewish Americans, especially Russian-speaking Jewish Americans, have sprung into action to help those going through a nightmare similar to what many of their ancestors endured. 

Although Russia has bombed many civilian areas, Ukraine has kept up a resilient internet connection. That has allowed for an avalanche of messages, posts and shares online, all reaching out for help. Journalist Lev Gringauz is an editorial fellow at the magazine Twin Cities Jewfolk and hosts the news podcast called “The Jews are Tired.” He reported on Jewish Americans rallying to provide grassroots support for Jewish Ukrainians. And he talks with Cathy Wurzer about the story.
