Shooting suspect briefly worked at U of M medical school before targeted attack

Vance Boelter worked briefly at the University of Minnesota’s medical school until the day before he allegedly stalked and killed former DFL House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark. 

Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans wants state lawmakers to consider increasing the penalty for impersonating a police officer in the wake of the Hortman and Hoffman shootings. Authorities allege Boelter posed as a police officer in order to gain access to the lawmakers. Posing as police officer is a misdemeanor in Minnesota. It becomes a felony if repeated within five years.

A Hennepin County Judge has sentenced a woman to nearly 24 years in prison for driving her SUV into a group of people in downtown Minneapolis last fall. The incident killed 16-year-old De’Miaya Broome. Latalia Margalli pleaded guilty to unintentional murder as well as several assault charges.

Gov. Tim Walz on Tuesday surveyed storm damage in Beltrami County. Weekend storms brought hurricane-force winds to the area and wreaked havoc in Bemidji and neighboring communities. Walz said homeowners and the counties will be taking on significant costs with the recovery work. He said a state disaster assistance contingency account will help with some of the recovery.

It’s going to be a summer of bridge work along Interstates 35E and 94 in downtown St. Paul. The Minnesota Department of Transportation says crews will be repairing nine bridges over the freeway beginning this weekend. The project also includes rebuilding the John Ireland Boulevard bridge over I-94 between the Capitol and the cathedral.
