The state pushed for the nearly 24-year sentence, given what prosecutors said was the magnitude of Latalia Margalli’s decision to 

drive her SUV into a large group of people

 in downtown Minneapolis on Sept. 14, 2024.  

 to unintentional murder and several assault counts for the incident, which stemmed from a fight. 

Prior to the sentencing, several people shared stories with the judge of their anguish at the loss of 16-year-old De’Miaya Broome, the teenager who was killed.

Following the court appearance, Broome’s grieving parents Juan and Andrea Broome told MPR News they believe justice was served.

“Somebody said, you know, y’all have closure on this, but I don’t think you ever get closure behind some of this,” Juan Broome said. “So what we trying to do is heal, because it has literally torn my family apart.”

Andrea Broome said, even with the sentencing behind them, she and her husband will never have closure over the loss of their daughter. Broome said she was “grateful” for the more than 15-year sentence.

“I knew in the end that the judge would, you know, see, see it for the family, not just for my family, but the other victims and I'm okay with it. I think now I can relax and start to heal,” Andrea Broome said.

Margalli fled the scene after the crash. She was arrested soon after, when police located her SUV. She was sentenced to 285 months. She has 284 days of credit for time served.
