Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is preparing for another four years in office, this time with the DFL in control of both chambers of the state Legislature and the governorship in January.
Ellison won reelection Tuesday defeating Republican Ron Schutz with 54 percent of the vote. This will be Ellison’s third term as state’s top law enforcement official.
The attorney general has focused on protecting consumers from unfair business practices and enforcing antitrust laws. With Democrats’ majorities in the Legislature, lawmakers could take action to strengthen the state’s ability to investigate corporate mergers and hold businesses accountable.
“I think if you look at what has created the massive income and wealth inequality in our country, which has been brewing for 50 years now, and now is at a very severe point, it is because of unchecked mergers [and] consolidation of markets,” Ellison told MPR News host Emily Reese on All Things Considered.

Ellison also weighed in on Governor-elect Amy Klobuchar’s promise to continue to tackle fraud in the city.
“If you steal from the public, usually programs that are designed to help poor people, this is a horrible thing to do, and you got to be accountable for it,” he said. “And we're committed to that fight right along with the governor.”
Ellison added that he was committed to serving out his third term as the “people’s lawyer.”
