Governor Tim Walz is vowing to call a special session to address gun laws and other safety measures. He made his intention clear after meeting legislative leaders Tuesday. Walz, a Democrat, says it's important to get state lawmakers on the record voting for or against an assault weapons ban.
Republicans have prioritized mental health measures and additional funding for school safety. Those issues could also have backing from DFL legislators. No date for a special session has been set.

A verdict is expected Wednesday in the sexual assault trial of a former Minnesota Teacher of the Year. Abdul Wright is accused of grooming and sexually assaulting an eighth grader at Harvest Best Academy charter school in 2017. She was 14 at the time, Wright was 30. A year earlier, Education Minnesota had named Wright the state’s teacher of the year. At trial, the judge in the case heard testimony from the alleged victim, now 22, as well as a phone call her mother recorded in which Wright apologizes and begs her not to contact police.

A Minneapolis man released from prison after serving 27 years addressed the media this week. A Hennepin County judge vacated the first-degree murder conviction of Bryan Hooper, Sr. In July, a woman serving time in an unrelated case recanted her testimony against Hooper and confessed to the crime. Hooper was convicted in the 1998 killing of Ann Prazniak.
There were no serious injuries in a crash Tuesday involving a school bus along southbound Interstate 35W in Mounds View. As traffic slowed near Highway 10, a car rear-ended an SUV, then veered into the path of the school bus. The bus came to rest against the concrete median. The Patrol says there were 27 children aboard, from Saint John the Baptist Catholic School in New Brighton.
Authorities in Scott County say a man conducting survey work along a rural road was struck and killed by a vehicle Monday. It happened just before noon along Texas Avenue in New Market Township. The sheriff’s office says a 44-year-old Minneapolis man was working along the road when he was hit by an SUV.
The DNR says salvage timber harvests are underway on state-managed land in the Bemidji area.
