Thursday marks 24 years after the devastating 9/11 terrorist attacks that killed thousands of people in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Several observances are scheduled in communities across Minnesota.
Following the killing of conservative commentator and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk Wednesday, state Sen. John Hoffman and his family are calling on leaders of both the Democratic and Republican parties to address political violence. In a statement, Hoffman said, “America is broken, and political violence endangers our lives and democracy.”
Hoffman, a DFLer from Champlin, was shot nine times during an assassination attempt in June, the same night former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed.
12-year-old Sophia Forchas is out of critical condition. Forchas was shot in the head during the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis. A doctor Friday said a bullet caused major damage to her brain and she had to be placed in a medically induced coma. A Hennepin Healthcare spokesperson says Forchas is in “serious” condition as of Wednesday which includes “a chance for improved prognosis.”
