Immigrant-run businesses play a significant role in Minnesota’s economy.

From trucking and construction to healthcare and retail, they create jobs and serve communities across the state.

But for many immigrant entrepreneurs right now, the path is uphill.

They find themselves navigating shifting tariffs, worker shortages and evolving immigration policies. And some say that Minnesota’s business climate can feel unwelcoming to those who arrive from elsewhere.

MPR News guest host Chris Farrell talks with immigrant business owners about why they started their businesses, how they’re confronting new challenges and what immigrant entrepreneurs contribute to Minnesota.

Guests:

  • Daniel Hernandez, also known as “Danny en Minnesota,” is an entrepreneur and owner of Colonial Market & Restaurant, which has locations in north and south Minneapolis.

  • Alex Gebru is the CEO and owner of A1 Tree and Stump Removal, a tree removal company based in Bloomington, Minn.
