Democrats hold the seat of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman

In a special election Tuesday, Democrats held the seat former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman long occupied before her assassination in June.

Minnesota State Senator Ann Rest will retire from the state legislature after the upcoming, 2026 legislative session. Rest was first elected to the Minnesota House in 1984, serving eight terms there until she was elected to the Senate in 2000, the first of eight terms.

Minneapolis city attorneys will be in court Wednesday in an effort to stop a property owner from continuing to allow a homeless encampment on parking lots he owns. Regulators cited Hamoudi Sabri a dozen times after he refused to shut down the encampment at Lake Street and 28th Avenue. The city finally closed it early Wednesday after a shooting Monday night left seven people wounded, including three critically. Sabri says the encampment provided safety and community to unhoused people. But Regulatory Services Director Enrique Velázquez says it was a major hazard and should not be allowed to reopen.
