Minnesota gets a fresh coating of snow overnight

Authorities are responding to crashes and spinouts on Twin Cities freeways Wednesday morning after the metro area — and most of the rest of central and southern Minnesota — received a fresh coating of snow overnight. A winter weather advisory runs until 10 a.m. for east-central Minnesota including the north metro — and until early afternoon for much of western Wisconsin.

The Minnesota Senate will vote Wednesday on a proposal to provide rent assistance to people who need it. The proposal would redirect up to $40 million in unused funds from a court settlement that dealt with tax-forfeited lands and surplus proceeds.

The DFL-Senate likely can pass the bill, but it faces a tougher path in the tied House. Republican Speaker Lisa Demuth says her caucus will oppose it.

Minnesota utilities are installing innovative technology that allows more electricity to flow through the state's power lines. Minnesota Power recently installed about 50 of the so-called "smart spheres" or "magic balls."

Minnesota State Fair fans this week have a chance at owning a piece of its history. An auction with surplus equipment and memorabilia is open to the public. Bids are accepted online through Monday, March 16. The auction includes vintage wagons, State Fair posters and seats from the historic Lee & Rose Warner Coliseum.
