Each minute after someone’s heart stops is a countdown towards death — nine in 10 people die if they experience a cardiac arrest outside a hospital.

Dave Ogle beat the odds. The Woodbury man’s heart stopped seven years ago while he was at home watching TV. His wife Kris Patrow was able to perform CPR until paramedics arrived. And then he was rushed to one of the few hospitals in the world that was pioneering new techniques that could restore blood flow to his lifeless body.

MPR News host Angela Davis talks with Ogle and Patrow about his recovery, and with a cardiologist about the importance of CPR and why Minnesota has some of the best cardiac arrest survival rates in the country.

  • Dave Ogle survived a cardiac arrest in 2019 and is co-author of the new book “Deadline: A Reporter’s True Story of Cardiac Arrest and the Race to Survive.” He spent 16 years working as a TV news photojournalist, covering everything from tornadoes to the NFL and presidential elections, and earning four regional Emmy Awards. He also ran his own video production company, shooting and editing stories all over the world.

  • Kris Patrow is co-author with her husband Dave Ogle of “Deadline.” She is a vice president at the public relations firm Padilla and has worked for two decades in communications. She was previously a TV news anchor and reporter, producing stories that appeared on CNBC, the Discovery Channel, and NBC and ABC affiliates nationwide.

  • Dr. Demetris Yannopoulos is an interventional cardiologist with M Health Fairview and medical director of the University of Minnesota Medical School's Center for Resuscitation Medicine. He served on the committee that writes the American Heart Association's CPR guidelines and is considered an innovator in treating patients following a cardiac arrest. Before joining the University of Minnesota faculty in 2008, he completed medical school in Greece, a residency and a cardiology fellowship at the University of Minnesota and an interventional-cardiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
