By a 73-58 margin Monday night, the Minnesota House of Representatives approved funding for a $975 million Vikings stadium at the site of the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
Hundreds of Vikings fans rallied at the Mall of America this afternoon, as the team tried to bolster its case for a new, publicly funded stadium to replace the Metrodome.
Supporters of a new Vikings stadium opened their campaign today to win Monday's vote in the Minnesota Legislature. They plan a weekend-long drive aimed at the getting the public to convince lawmakers to vote for the stadium bill.
"I've always said I think the Vikings are an asset and I want them to stay," the House speaker says. But contrary to what he said Thursday, he does not support "the bill in the current form" for financing the Vikings stadium.
Republicans spent the better part of the week working on an alternate stadium plan that they eventually realized could not work. On Thursday, Republican House Speaker Kurt Zellers announced he was scrapping the plan and scheduling a vote on the original stadium proposal.
