October Snow

It was bound to happen.

Snow up north in October is an expected event, and the first flakes flew this morning. Reports indicate an inch or two of accumulation on grassy and woodsy areas, with melting on the pavement as temps begin to warm above the freezing point today.

Latest Conditions From NWS Duluth

Both NOAA and the Old Farmer's Almanac are calling for a warmer than average winter in the Upper Midwest. A growing La Nina in the tropical Pacific might indicate our chances for a "real" winter will be better than in recent years, but the La Nina signal for a cold snowy winter is not as strong as an El Nino signal for a mild winter in these parts.

Climate Prediction Center Outlooks

My "spidey senses" tell me we are due for a winter that's colder and snowier than in years past, but that would seem to be bucking the overall warming trend and potential "trump card" of climate change.
