Cutoffs

When we were kids back in the day, we would get out the scissors and cut off our old jeans to make shorts in summer. That's what the phrase "cutoffs" meant to me until my weather geekdom reached full fever in my late teens.

Now "cutoffs" are a very different thing. They are slow moving, rain and snow dumping low pressure systems that are cut off from the main polar front jet stream which steers weather systems along. Cutoffs move erratically, making their movement more difficult to forecast than average weather systems. That's why there's a saying, "A cutoff low is a weather man's woe."

Cutoff Lows

Our current cutoff will meander northward later tonight, giving us a brief break in the rain Wednesday before a new system brings more rain Thursday into Friday.

Best days to try and cut your swampy lawn, Wednesday and Saturday.
