We call it cyclogenesis.
It's the term we use when low pressure forms or intensifies. We're about to experience classic, rapid cyclogenesis in all of Minnesota over the next 48 hours, as a storm system developing near the Oklahoma panhandle winds up and moves northeast.
Compare the upper right images on the two NGM computer model runs below and look at how the surface low deepens, producing a huge pressure gradient over Minnesota by Thursday.

Note the "packing" of the isobars on the North Shore, indicating high winds.
What that means for us in terms of the weather you will experience is wind, rain, and thunder. In fact, if this were a winter storm, we would see heavy snow and blizzard conditions over parts of Minnesota Thursday. As it is, we can expect 1 to 2+ inches of rain in much of the state by Thursday night, and the North Shore will see classic "Nor'easter" type conditions, with high winds gusting 40 to 50 mph Thursday afternoon, and huge waves as the easterly winds cross the full fetch of the lake.
Hang on to your hat and umbrella!
