State legislators will spend most of the day away from the Capitol Wednesday to attend a conference on economic issues.
The annual, day-long gathering at the University of Minnesota is aimed at promoting better cooperation between Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate.
House Majority Leader Tony Sertich, D-Chisholm, said lawmakers will get a chance to talk to educators and business leaders about the state's projected $4.8 billion budget deficit and possible solutions.
Sertich said legislators will be seeking advice from as many sources as possible during the next few months.
"All the good ideas that are going to be necessary this year aren't going to found within this four block radius around the State Capitol. Those ideas are in every corner of the state. And we're going to reach out as we have been with the web site that's been developed here and the phone line to get ideas from Minnesotans on how we tackle this really historic budget deficit and these uncharted economic times," Sertich said.
The conference will cover strengthening the state's knowledge economy, energy technology and the green economy.
