After the warmest and most tranquil September in history for much of the Upper Midwest, a powerful cold front has reminded us where we live. Severe wind gusts over 60 mph and a 20 degree temperature drop accompanied the front.

You know how windy it is in your back yard. Now imagine living on a rock in Lake Superior. The Granite Island Light Station clings to a small rocky island in Lake Superior about 11 miles north of Marquette in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The 2.49 acre island is a perfect place to experience all the fury of storms on the big lake.
On January 18th, 2003 the weather station at Granite Island recorded a wind gust of 143 mph. The webcams capture the essence of what it's like to live on a rocky island in the world's largest freshwater lake.
Kind of makes you appreciate the comforts of home.
