New Ulm allows sheep as mowers in industrial areas

The owner of an auto salvage business in New Ulm has found a natural way to control weeds growing in his junkyard: sheep.

The Mankato Free Press reports that the New Ulm City Council unanimously repealed its in-town sheep ban on Tuesday after years of requests by Southside Auto Salvage owner Mike Lang. Starting next month, sheep will be allowed to graze in fenced areas around industrial zones.

Lang says sheep are a practical solution for his yard-care needs. He says mowers can't navigate the maze of junked cars on his 12-acre site, and he doesn't want to use chemical sprays on his property abutting the Minnesota River.

Lang says he already has several loaner sheep lined up from a farmer friend.
