Athletics are a very important part of the university. They are a window through which people see the university. Part of athletics is whether you win or lose, and that influences how people see the university. And some people are uncomfortable about that. But Michigan, Virginia, UCLA and UC- Berkeley all have high-quality athletic programs, and that enhances their visibility and marketing across the country.
