Why have Minnesota's future Nobel Prize winners left?

You may have just seen the infographic of where the Nobel Prize science winners have come from, and that this year's two Nobel economics winners once worked at the University of Minnesota.

Reed Carpenter of Bloomington makes this observation through our Public Insight Network:

Over the past few years four Nobel prize winners in economics have had a strong association with the University of Minnesota. However, at the time of their respective awards only one of the four was still in Minnesota. One had recently departed (Dr. Edward Prescott) and the this year's Nobel laureates had left earlier. The ability to attract and retain key faculty means a great deal more to Minnesota's economy than does the pride we can take in saying we once employed these talented individuals.
