Jacobs sentenced for molestation

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A former chief of the Minneapolis Park Police has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for molesting a teenage boy over a three-year period.

Sixty-eight-year-old William Jacobs, of Lutsen, had pleaded guilty earlier to three counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and three counts of child pornography. After Jacobs' arrest in 2010, 17 men came forward and accused him of sexually abusing them between 1962 and 1980, when Jacobs was a teacher, camp counselor and coach. Those allegations, however, were too old to prosecute.

On Monday, Jacobs apologized in court and read a letter to his victims. He said he was sorry and that he was cursed when it comes to his sexual behavior.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman rejected that argument, saying Jacobs was responsible for his actions.
