Nicollet intersection closing in S. Mpls.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The busy intersection of 35th Street and Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis will be closed for construction starting Monday.

The intersection will be closed for about two weeks while the sewer system and road surfaces are improved.

The city of Minneapolis estimates an average of 10,000 vehicles pass through the intersection daily.

Minneapolis traffic director Jon Wertjes says drivers should use nearby parallel streets.

"If you're trying to access the freeway," Wertjes says, "we encourage you to go an exit to the south or to the north, down to 46th or up to 31st street, as alternatives. If you're on the local street system on 35th Street, we encourage you to head north on First Avenue or south on Stevens and kind of bypass the area."

The road closing is part of a two-year renovation of Nicollet Avenue.
