Police: Lake Shetek boat crash is fatal

LAKE SHETEK, Minn. (AP) -- Sheriff's officials say a boating crash on a lake in southwestern Minnesota is fatal, but they are providing few details about what happened.

The Marshall Independent reports one boater died in an accident on Lake Shetek early Sunday in Murray County.

Residents and business owners on Lake Shetek say visibility is a major concern late at night when a boat's marker lights don't provide enough illumination for navigating. They say the crash happened at a bridge on the second dike of Lake Shetek.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says this year is turning out to be one of the deadliest on state waterways. Twenty-eight people have drowned in the lakes and rivers of Minnesota, including boating-related deaths. That's more than any other year in the past decade.
