Worst of flu outbreak winding down

Minnesota's death toll from influenza has reached 127.

The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed 15 additional flu-related deaths in the state last week, less than half as many as the 36 flu deaths in the previous week.

Several signs indicate that the worst of the outbreak continues to wind down. The number of people hospitalized for flu during the fifth week of the year dropped to 108 last week and schools and long-term care facilities reported fewer outbreaks.

The most commonly cultured influenza strain at the state's Public Health Laboratory is H3N2 — a Type-A flu virus that is typically hardest on older people.
