Alexander Obersteg of Steinfeld, Germany, was killed when his plane went down Saturday in Lake Superior about a mile east of Brighton Beach in Duluth, officials said Wednesday.
The plane took off from Duluth International Airport Saturday morning and went off radar over the lake. The plane's fuselage was located about 140 feet below the lake surface. A commercial dive team was called in to recover the body.
It appears Obersteg was flying to Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada, with a final destination of Steinfeld, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said.
Authorities believe he was the only victim. The St. Louis County Medical Examiner ruled out a medical emergency contributing to the crash.
