The University of Minnesota will award a posthumous honorary degree to music legend Prince.

The university's regents voted Friday to bestow an honorary doctorate of humane letters to the singer.

"He is considered to be one of the influential musicians of the 20th century. His unexpected death saddened Minnesota and the world. We will arrange a very significant event in the near future to honor Prince and to present this degree," University President Eric Kaler said.

The U said it was already considering the degree for Prince prior to his death in April.

Prince died from an accidental overdose of the narcotic painkiller fentanyl.
