Hurricane Irma is thrashing Florida just days after Hurricane Harvey overwhelmed areas of Texas and Louisiana.

What is it that causes these storms to wreak so much havoc? And what can be done to mitigate their damage?

John Abraham from the University of St. Thomas talked with MPR News Host Kerri Miller about the science behind the two enormous storms that have been assailing the U.S. coast.
