Several European countries smashed all-time heat records Thursday. Paris hit 108.6 degrees, the hottest temperature ever recorded there, and 4 degrees higher than the previous record.

Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands also set all-time heat records Thursday.

Scandinavia next

The record heat dome shifts north into Scandinavia in the next few days. Most people in that region do not have air conditioning.

Climate change connection

There’s now a strong, and growing, body of climate attribution science that shows heat waves like those in Europe are more likely and more intense because of climate change.

Minnesota: Spotty thundershowers

We’re back in the rainfall business across parts of Minnesota. But business will be slow through Friday. NOAA’s North American Mesoscale Forecast System 3 km resolution model captures the essence of spotty thundershower waves through Friday afternoon.

Severe weather not likely

The chances for severe weather are fairly low through Friday. A few storms have already produced pea to dime-sized hail. Friday’s risk zone is marginal (low) for most of eastern Minnesota.

Saturday the best day

Saturday looks like the best day this weekend. More numerous showers and thunderstorms look likely Sunday. Temperatures look pleasant early next week.
