Frigid temperatures this weekend prompt cold weather advisories

Light snow is on tap for northern Minnesota Thursday, but a more widespread snow will impact the state Monday, followed by our coldest temperatures so far this season.

A weak cold front is passing through the state, bringing light snow to northern Minnesota. The highest snow totals will likely be only 2 to 3 inches for northern parts of the Arrowhead, and the snow moves out by late afternoon. 

The rest of the state will see mostly cloudy skies and maybe a flurry. Temperatures will remain seasonable, ranging from the upper 20s to mid-30s.

Behind that front, cooler air moves in, dropping temperatures 5-10 degrees for Friday, with more of our high temperatures in the teens and 20s. 

Temperatures recover right away with most of the state seeing 30s again by Saturday.

After Thursday’s snow for northern Minnesota, northern Minnesota could see a couple minor disturbances by late Friday and Saturday bringing flurries or light dustings of snow. 

Our next more significant system impacts the state with snow Sunday and Monday. For the Twin Cities, snow timing currently would start Sunday evening, with the heaviest snowfall Monday morning. 

Snow totals are still uncertain, but it is likely there will be at least a couple inches, if not more, and the Monday morning commute could be slow.

The same storm bringing snow concerns for Sunday and Monday will also funnel in much colder air, especially for Tuesday and Wednesday. In fact, as the storm passes through, our temperatures could fall continuously from Sunday afternoon through Tuesday morning.  This graphic illustrates how temperatures will drop in the 36 hours from 2 p.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Tuesday:

Tuesday and Wednesday could struggle to see highs above freezing, and overnight lows could easily be minus 10 or colder.

Temperatures should start to rebound by next Thursday.
