Severe thunderstorms dump egg-sized hail Tuesday morning

2 inch-diameter hail in Ladysmith, Wis.

The 2020 Upper Midwest severe weather season started off with a bang Tuesday morning. Check out this impressive egg-sized hail around 2 inches in diameter that fell near Ladysmith, Wis.

Severe thunderstorms developed in west-central Minnesota in the hours around midnight Monday night. They rolled across Minnesota producing severe thunderstorm warnings from near Alexandria through St. Cloud, Minn. The storms produced three-quarter-inch-diameter hail in St. Cloud at 2:51 a.m.

The storms intensified overnight into this morning. That’s when they pelted the Ladysmith, Wis., area with huge hailstones. Reports indicate the hail fell for as much as six minutes at Ladysmith Airport.

Hailstones on the ground looked like an early extreme weather Easter egg hunt even an hour after the hail fell.

The Twin Cities Doppler radar detected this hail track Tuesday morning near Ladysmith. Doppler radar algorithms can separate hail from raindrops by the different density of radar returns.

The overnight storms produced the first severe weather warnings of the season for Minnesota.
