It’s an upside-down weather map across Minnesota today.
Temperatures are in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees across northern Minnesota today. Meanwhile in southern Minnesota temperatures hover in the relatively chilly 50s and 60s.

All about sunshine
Temperatures this time of year are highly dependant on powerful May sunshine. The sun angle is so high across Minnesota now that it makes little difference how far north you are. If it’s sunny, it can easily be warmer in northern Minnesota than in the south. The GOES-16 visible satellite image below shows abundant sunshine across central and northern Minnesota today.

Gradually warmer
It certainly feels like early summer in central and northern Minnesota. But our stubborn cloud deck has thrown a loop into a previous forecasts of much warmer temperatures early this week in the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota. We gradually mix in more sunshine as the week rolls in. That will help push temperature into the upper 70s across more of Minnesota Wednesday.
