Humid air mass brings return of occasional thunderstorms

Occasional storms and some severe weather through Friday

Our morning and midday thunderstorms rolling across Minnesota are a reminder that tropical air has returned. Dew points have returned into the 60s, and that moisture will be fuel for occasional thunderstorms as we move toward Friday.

Most forecast models projected the storms in southwest Minnesota would fade this morning before reaching the Twin Cities. Our more humid atmosphere had other ideas.

Severe risk

The atmosphere this week is unstable enough that each little upper air wave that comes along will trigger a batch of thunderstorms. The highest risk of severe weather favors western Minnesota through Thursday.

By Friday the risk of severe weather expands across most of Minnesota.

This is the type of air mass where we can get pop-up thunderstorms with little advance notice. Keep an eye on radars this week.
