The last of the big 3 summer holiday weekends is almost here. Climatologically Labor Day weekend is the driest and quietest holiday weekend of the summer season. This year looks favorable through Sunday overall. An inbound cold front on Labor Day will make that the coolest day this weekend.
Summery through Sunday
This will be a great weekend to get out on the water or land around Minnesota. A late-summer weather pattern holds through Sunday. Highs reach the 80s in southern Minnesota both Saturday and Sunday, with mostly 70s up north.

Sunday morning thunder?
A warm front will bubble north across southern Minnesota Sunday morning. That will likely trigger a few thunderstorms overnight Saturday night into Sunday morning favoring southern Minnesota.
NOAA’s NAM 3 km resolution model suggests a cluster of thunderstorms developing Saturday night into early Sunday morning across southern Minnesota including the Twin Cities.
A steamy air mass oozes into southern Minnesota Sunday behind the warm front. Dew points in the mid-60s will still feel like summer Sunday afternoon.
Labor Day cold front
The season’s strongest cold front so far blows south across Minnesota on Labor Day. Scattered showers will roam on Labor Day.
Highs only reach the 50s across most of Minnesota by Tuesday. That will get our attention.
Frost likely next week up north
Many locations across northern Minnesota will likely see the first frost of the season next week. Low temperatures by Wednesday morning will dip into the 30s up north.
There are signs of warmer weather again after next week. We’re not done with 70s yet, and I have a hunch we’ll see 80 degrees again in many parts of Minnesota this month.
