Stormy night: Multiple tornado sightings south of the Twin Cities

Warnings crept into southern Twin Cities.

Scattered thunderstorms moving through southern Minnesota Wednesday evening had just enough rotation to spin up some small tornadoes.

Multiple tornado reports came in from locations just south of the Twin Cities along the Interstate 35 corridor.

Here are some of the tornado reports coming in Wednesday night.

  • 3 W Owatonna [Steele Co, MN] LAW ENFORCEMENT reports TORNADO at 19 May, 7:25 PM CDT -- 3 W OWATONNA. ONE OF TWO TORNADOES WEST OF OWATONNA. LOCATION APPROXIMATE. WENT NORTH TOWARD MEDFORD.

  • 3 E Morristown [Rice Co, MN] TRAINED SPOTTER reports TORNADO at 19 May, 7:45 PM CDT -- TREES DOWN. NO STRUCTURES WERE DAMAGED. CAUGHT ON PICTURES AND VIDEO. THIS WAS A BRIEF TOUCHDOWN. ANOTHER FUNNEL WAS CLOSE BY BUT COULD NOT SEE WHETHER THAT TOUCHED DOWN.

  • 3 E Morristown [Rice Co, MN] TRAINED SPOTTER reports TORNADO at 19 May, 7:45 PM CDT -- SEPARATE TORNADO FROM THE OTHER ONE 3 E MORRISTOWN. THE TORNADOES WERE SEPARATED BY ABOUT ONE MILE. BOTH WERE PHOTOGRAPHED AND CAUGHT ON VIDEO BY A LONGTIME SPOTTER.

  • 4 ENE Henderson [Scott Co, MN] STORM CHASER reports TORNADO at 19 May, 8:01 PM CDT -- CROSSED HIGHWAY 19 4 ENE HENDERSON ALONG THE SCOTT LE SUEUR COUNTY LINE.

  • 6 WSW Dundas [Rice Co, MN] LAW ENFORCEMENT reports TORNADO at 19 May, 8:21 PM CDT -- RELAYED BY RICE COUNTY SKYWARN. STORM CHASER SAW TREES DOWNED.

  • 2 E Elko NEW Market [Scott Co, MN] TRAINED SPOTTER reports TORNADO at 19 May, 8:42 PM CDT -- REPORTED AS RAIN WRAPPED. REPORT RELAYED BY SCOTT COUNTY 911.

  • At 901 PM CDT, a confirmed tornado was located over Lakeville according to Twin Cities NWS Office.

Wednesday night’s tornadoes spun up from fairly unusual storms. Severe weather parameters we’re not high enough to prompt severe weather risk areas during the day Wednesday. But rotational wind shear (spin) strengthened quickly in the evening hours. That was just enough to spin up some tornadoes in these nontypical supercell storms.
