Crank up the wind machine. Gusty winds on the backside of our giant mid-latitude cyclone will drive scattered rain and snow showers through Thursday.
We’ve already seen wind gusts to around 45 mph in most of western Minnesota Wednesday afternoon. Winds will exceed 50 mph in the Red River Valley into Thursday.
Wind advisories are in effect for most of western Minnesota through Thursday.
Including the cities of Alexandria, Long Prairie, Morris, Glenwood, St Cloud, Madison, Benson, Montevideo, Willmar, Litchfield, Granite Falls, Olivia, Hutchinson, Gaylord, Redwood Falls, New Ulm, St Peter, St James, Mankato, Fairmont, and Blue Earth

...WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM CDT THURSDAY...
* WHAT...Northwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected.
* WHERE...Portions of central, south central, southwest and west central Minnesota.
* WHEN...From 7 AM this morning to 10 PM CDT Thursday.
* IMPACTS...Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.
Additional snowfall in northwestern Minnesota will produce near-blizzard conditions in some areas.

Occasional snow showers
Most of Minnesota will see occasional snow showers through Thursday. That will produce another snowy coating in much of Minnesota. In the Twin Cities, it should be confined to a temporary coating on grassy areas.
Milder this weekend
At least the timing of our midweek storm pattern is better for the weekend. Saturday brings bright, welcome sunshine to Minnesota. Highs will reach the 50-degree mark in the south.
Look for a few more clouds mixed in Sunday and Monday. But highs will push well into the 50s in southern Minnesota.
