There’s good news in many Minnesota farm fields this week.
Our warmer and drier weather pattern has helped Minnesota farmers nearly catch up to the 5-year average in the percent of corn planted in Minnesota.
Monday’s Minnesota Crop Report shows that 93 percent of Minnesota’s corn crop is now in the ground. That’s close to the 5-year average of 98 percent. And it’s a big leap forward from three weeks ago when just 35 percent of corn was in the ground on May 16.
The chart below provides more granular detail. You can see that the percent of corn that has emerged from the soil is just 66 percent compared to 95 percent last year.

According to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, conditions allowed 4.3 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending June 5, 2022. Strong storms in parts of the state caused some barn and building damage.
Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 69 percent adequate, and 29 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 0 percent very short, 3 percent short, 74 percent adequate, and 23 percent surplus.
Corn planting reached 93 percent complete, 21 days behind last year and 5 days behind the 5-year average. Corn emergence reached 66 percent. Corn condition was 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 36 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 7 percent excellent.
Soybean planting was 72 percent complete, 25 days behind last year and 12 days behind the 5-year average. Soybean emergence reached 39 percent.
Oats was 86 percent planted, 68 percent emerged, and 11 percent jointing. Oats condition was 1 percent very poor, 1 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.
Spring wheat was 65 percent planted and 33 percent emerged.
Barley was 60 percent planted and 35 percent emerged. Dry edible beans was 33 percent planted and 8 percent emerged.
Potatoes planted was at 88 percent and sugarbeets planted at 90 percent.
Alfalfa hay first cutting was at 23 percent. All hay condition was rated at 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Pasture condition was rated at 2 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.
