Cloud/sun line stalled out over east metro Sunday; near normal temps this week

Areas of fog Monday morning

Most of us saw some sunshine on Sunday, but the western edge of the cloud deck stalled out over far eastern Minnesota. The western part of the Twin Cities metro area saw plenty of sun, but the sunshine was delayed until afternoon in the east metro. Sunshine finally arrived around 1:30 p.m. Sunday in my part of St. Paul. Some spots in the far eastern portion of the metro area and southeastern Minnesota stayed mostly cloudy.

Fog possible Monday morning

Our winds will be fairly light overnight and early Monday. That will allow areas of fog to develop in parts of Minnesota and western Wisconsin late Sunday night into early Monday morning.

Rain chances?

North-central and northeastern Minnesota have a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms Sunday evening and overnight Sunday night. Parts of southwestern Minnesota could also see a few showers.

Southwestern Minnesota and northeastern Minnesota have the best chance of seeing some showers and thunderstorms on Monday. NOAA’s High-Resolution Rapid-Refresh (HRRR) forecast model shows the potential rain pattern from 5 a.m. Monday to 11 p.m. Monday:

Temperature trends

Our average Twin Cities high temperature is 81 degrees on August 15. Metro area highs are expected to be mainly in the upper 70s on Monday. We’ll share highs in the 70s with much of Minnesota, with lower 80s possible in northwestern Minnesota:

Some spots near Lake Superior will have highs in the 60s.

Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the lower 80s Tuesday through Thursday, then around 80 on Friday.

Near-normal highs are expected next weekend, then we could see warmer than normal temps the following week. The NWS Climate Prediction Center shows a tendency for above-normal temps in much of the upper Midwest from August 22 through August 28:
