Weekend weather: Cool, with shower chances on Saturday

Southeastern Minnesota could also see a Sunday shower

We’re flirting with 90 degrees Thursday afternoon in the Twin Cities metro area, and some spots in southwestern Minnesota will be well into the 90s. Temps will be turning much cooler this weekend.

A cold front will move slowly through Minnesota Thursday evening and through Thursday night and Friday. There are already some scattered showers in parts of northwestern Minnesota early Thursday afternoon. Additional areas of showers will develop later Thursday afternoon in northern Minnesota, then spread into central Minnesota Thursday evening, with a few thunderstorms also possible. Areas of showers and thunderstorms are possible anywhere in Minnesota and western Wisconsin overnight Thursday night and on Friday.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center shows a marginal risk of severe weather Thursday and Thursday night in portions of northern and central Minnesota and parts Wisconsin:

The northwest side of the Twin Cities metro area is also in the marginal risk area late Thursday night. Marginal risk means that an isolated severe thunderstorm is possible.

Rain chances Friday into Saturday

The front will move very slowly southeastward Friday into Saturday, so shower chances will linger. A few thunderstorms are also possible. NOAA’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model shows the potential rain pattern from noon Friday to 7 p.m. on Saturday:

One forecast model shows a lingering shower in southeastern Minnesota and parts of Wisconsin Sunday morning.
