We’re living through the driest September on record in the Twin Cities and much of Minnesota.

MSP Airport has recorded just .23” of precipitation this month. That’s a full 2.7” below average for September. And so far this year the Twin Cities is running nearly 8 inches below Average precipitation.

Thursday’s updated U.S. Drought Monitor for Minnesota increased the area of moderate drought in parts of western Minnesota.

Overall drought coverage in Minnesota went from 14 percent last week, to 22 percent this week.

Late fall color show

September is running about 2.5 degrees warmer than average in the Twin Cities. The warmth this month and the relative lack of frosty nights have delayed the fall color show across Minnesota this season.

Fall color is around 25 to 50 percent up north with some spectacular shows in some areas like Lutsen.

Fall color in the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota is still running between 0 and 25% in most areas.
