Summery weather is lingering in Minnesota this season. Southerly wind flow means temperatures are in the 70s once again Tuesday afternoon in much of our state. 

The 30-year average high temperature for the Twin Cities on Oct. 4 is 65 degrees. The first four days of October have all produced highs in the 70s in the Twin Cities and most of southern Minnesota. So far temperatures are running 9 degrees warmer than average in the Twin Cities this month. 

Expect one more day in the 70s across much of Minnesota Wednesday.

A respectable cold front will advance into northern Minnesota by Wednesday evening. By Thursday morning, brisk northwest winds will remind us it’s October. Highs will be 20 degrees colder across most of Minnesota Thursday.

Friday looks like the coldest morning this week. Lows in the 20s will cover much of Minnesota, and the Twin Cities could dip to near the freezing mark Friday morning.

It doesn’t look like the cold air wants to stick around so far this fall. 

Models from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Global Forecast System both suggest warmer air will return to Minnesota next week. Highs will rise through the 60s Monday afternoon in the south. 

But forecast models suggest 70s will return to at least southern Minnesota next week.

NOAA’s Global Forecast System model and the agency’s three to four week outlook both suggest warmth could linger well into October this year.
