Wintry mix Thursday night, another storm Friday

Saturday was a classic sun-splashed October day. The Twin Cities high temp was 64 degrees, which is two degrees warmer than our average Oct. 8 high temp. Some spots in west-central Minnesota, including Morris, Appleton and Madison, touched 70 degrees Saturday afternoon. We could see 70 here in the Twin Cities in a couple of days.

Sunday highs reach the 60s in most areas, with 50s in far northern Minnesota:

Looking to the coming week, Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to around 70 on Monday, followed by upper 70s Tuesday. Then temps retreat, with metro highs in the lower 60s Wednesday, followed by 50 Thursday and lower 50s Friday.

Tuesday will be the warmest day of the week across most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin, with highs mainly in the 70s:

There’ll be some 60s in northeastern Minnesota.

An upper-level disturbance could spawn some scattered showers in northern and central Minnesota Sunday morning. The shower coverage should shrink by afternoon, but an isolated shower will be possible in the metro area and southern Minnesota early Sunday afternoon.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) model shows the potential rain pattern from 3 a.m. Sunday to 3 p.m. Sunday:

Looking to the coming week, the Twin Cities metro area could see a shower or a thunderstorm Tuesday evening and some scattered showers are possible on Wednesday.

If leaf-peeping is in your weekend plans, you won’t have to go very far; brilliant fall colors are visible in many parts of Minnesota.  I’ve spotted pockets of excellent fall color in the Twin Cities metro area the past few days. Some trees haven’t yet transitioned to autumn hues, and a few trees have already dropped most of their leaves.

When you look at fall color maps, keep in mind that all deciduous trees are included. The maples can be peaking in a given area when the overall changeover to fall color is 50 percent or less.
