March begins in two weeks. That means we’re in the home stretch of a meteorological winter in Minnesota that’s delivered some wild ups and down on thermometers.
Examples? Check out these temperatures in the Twin Cities so far this winter compared to the average.
December, 4 degrees below average
January, 4 degrees above average
February, 4.7 degrees above average (through Feb. 14)
The relative warmth this month has been even more pronounced in northern Minnesota.
Duluth, 5.4 degrees above average
International Falls, 6.9 degrees above average
Temperatures return to around or slightly below average for what looks like the remainder of February. If February finishes close to average, we may end up with a meteorological winter that’s nearly or a little milder than average overall.
Forecast models and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s eight to 14-day outlook favors colder-than-average temperatures for the rest of this month.
The average high and low by Saturday in the Twin Cities reach 30 and 14 degrees.
