Friday rain update; Saturday morning shower chances; Sunday looks rain-free

Fall color update for leaf-peepers

We had some welcome rain across much of Minnesota and neighboring states Thursday into Friday morning. Here’s the rainfall map from 7 a.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Friday:

Much of southwestern Minnesota tallied 2 to 3 inches of rain, with lower amounts to the east and north.

Western portions of the Twin Cities metro area saw about 2 inches of rain, with closer to 1 inch in the east metro through 7 a.m. Friday. The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, a volunteer observer network, posted this 24-hour rainfall plot:

Additional rain

Periods of rain continue in many areas Friday afternoon and Friday night, with lingering showers possible in the south Saturday morning.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale forecast model shows the potential rain pattern from 6 p.m. Friday to noon on Saturday:

Saturday afternoon looks mainly dry, with an isolated shower chance. Sunday is expected to be rain-free across most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

Weekend temps

The average Twin Cities high temperature is 59 degrees on Oct. 14. Metro area highs are forecast to be in the lower 50s on Saturday.

Highs in the 40s are expected Saturday in north-central and northeastern Minnesota plus northwestern Wisconsin.

Fall color report

Portions of northern Minnesota are past peak for fall colors, but beautiful fall colors are still on display across much of Minnesota.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources fall color report for Minnesota State Parks and Trails looks like this:

When you look at the fall color map, keep in mind that all deciduous trees are included, not just maples.
