It’s the time of the year when your local meteorologist keeps an eye out for unusually cold fall storms. 

Storms in late October have been known to cause an October surprise that can show up as a coating of white on your lawn. The average snowfall in the Twin Cities in October is eight-tenths (0.8) of an inch, after all. So snow is certainly possible in late October.

So far, the weather maps are behaving as we look into late October. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s six to 10-day temperature outlooks still favor a slight mild bias for the Upper Midwest (see the map above).

We’re enjoying that warm bias Tuesday with temperatures into the mid-60s across much of Minnesota. 

Highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s look likely around the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota as we look ahead into next week.

Right now the forecast models don't suggest any significant snow in the next 10 days. But it should be noted a couple of models did briefly hiccup a chance for snow across our region in the last days of October. 

Keep in mind the average date for the first inch of snow in the Twin Cities is Nov. 18. So we may still have a little breathing room before we need to steel ourselves for the inevitable change to come. 

But there have been many seasons that have produced the first inch of snowfall in October in the Twin Cities.
