Today in Fargo-Moorhead: Fergus Falls behavioral health unit closing, enrollment up across Minnesota State system

Sunshine! 46 degrees! (At least for Thursday.) We cool off a bit Friday with clouds and a high of 28. The weekend is looking much warmer.

Lake Region Healthcare is closing its Bridgeway inpatient behavioral health unit in Fergus Falls. Leaders point to staffing shortages, rising costs and a decline in patient numbers. The hospital will still provide outpatient mental health services but plans to partner with regional inpatient units, including one in Fargo.

College enrollment is reportedly up across the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system for the first time in over a decade. The system includes Minnesota State University Moorhead, Minnesota State Community and Technical College and 31 other schools across the state.

Advocates for tougher gun possession laws returned to the Capitol with new purpose Wednesday, touting passage of bills last year while citing recent incidents since in their call to do more.

Sunday’s fatal shooting of three first responders in Burnsville was top of mind as families affected by gun violence and the group Protect Minnesota put forward a slate of proposals.

Stephen Soundheim lovers, rejoice: Thursday is the opening night of the musical “Company” at North Dakota State University, which runs through the weekend. All music and lyrics are by Soundheim.

Local railroad history buffs can convene at the Moorhead Public Library on Thursday. Historian Mark Peihl will present.

The Red River Valley Home and Garden show starts Friday and runs through the weekend at the Fargodome.

The area’s first Silent Disco (ice) Skate Party is in downtown Fargo on Friday night.

Friday night is dubstep DJ night at TAK Music Venue in Dilworth.

Swing dance at Cupid’s Jazz Jubilee at Cellar 624 on Friday night.
