The DFL won control of the Minnesota Legislature in Tuesday's election. But, pending a recount, it may lose its last state Senate seat in western Minnesota.

Incumbent Sen. Rob Kupec, DFL-Moorhead, is down by just four votes against Republican Austin Peterson, a real estate developer living in Hawley. The thin margin means the vote is set to be recounted.

The Moorhead seat has been held by the DFL for decades, but Republicans saw the seat as vulnerable amid the DFL’s fragile majority in the Legislature.

As of Oct. 19 outside groups spent more than $3 million on the race, with Peterson supporters spending $2.2 million of that sum.

Neither candidate could be reached by MPR News for an interview. But both acknowledged in statements Wednesday morning that a recount is imminent.
