A shoutout to my fellow meteorologists at the Twin Cities and other National Weather Service offices around Minnesota and the Upper Midwest. Over the past several decades these dedicated weather professionals have done an amazing job of educating, preparing, and 

 residents of the Upper Midwest on the dangers of severe weather. 

Minnesota may not get the headlines that tornado alley(s) get, but the number of severe storms, hail, and wind damage in Minnesota is significant. 

homeowner’s insurance rates have more than quadrupled

 in the past 15+ years.  The average Minnesota homeowner’s premium was $368 a year in 1998. By 2021, that had climbed to more than $1,600.

 is a timely reminder that severe weather impacts us in many ways here in Minnesota. Here’s more on this week’s focus from the Twin Cities NWS office. 

Sirens will sound at 1:45 and 6:45 p.m. this Thursday for the statewide tornado drill. A word about sirens. They are intended as an outdoor warning device. You should have multiple ways (safety nest) to get severe weather information. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather radios, your smartphone, radio and TV are valuable sources.
