Coon Rapids police officer fatally shoots man

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating after a police officer shot and killed a man in Coon Rapids on Wednesday.

According to a statement from the police department, a woman called police around noon and reported a domestic incident in her home on 111th Avenue. She said a man had cut her with a knife.

Responding officers first tried to contact that man from outside the home, as the injured woman and another person left the building.

Police said the suspect who remained inside the home refused to leave and refused commands to drop a knife. An officer fired a less-lethal round.

According to police, the man retreated further inside, and officers then went into the home to arrest him. The man allegedly did not drop the knife, and an officer fired another less-lethal round.

Authorities said the man then moved toward police, and a third officer fired their gun, striking the man.

The man died at a hospital; his name has not been released. The woman who initially called police was hospitalized for treatment of her injuries. The third person in the home was not injured.

The department said body camera footage captured the incident. The BCA was on the scene Wednesday.

The officers involved in the incident are on standard administrative leave.
