Doppler radars are getting a much needed rest across Minnesota Tuesday.
The National Weather Service has survey teams in the field documenting tornado damage and tracks from Monday’s significant severe weather outbreak. More than a dozen preliminary tornado reports will be whittled down to the final number after weeding out multiple sightings with ground truth.
It looks like the Gull Lake-area tornado may have been a longer track storm as it persisted all the way through the north end of Lake Mille Lacs. Stay tuned for details as the field surveys come in.
Some good news? Torrential rainfall drenched much of northeastern Minnesota in the fire zones. Anywhere from 2 to more than 4 inches fell across much of northeastern Minnesota the past two days. That should knock down fire danger for a while.

Quieter days ahead
Our weather pattern mellows with a lukewarm early summer air mass this week. Most of the significant rain will steer south of Minnesota in the coming days. A few thundershowers may clip northern Minnesota Wednesday into Thursday.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s High-Resolution Rapid Refresh model shows the trend between 2 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Thursday:
Highs this week will generally run in the lower 80s south to 70s north across Minnesota.
Steamy weekend ahead
A steamy summer air mass will blow into Minnesota this upcoming weekend. Highs will push into the 90s in the south.
A plume of tropical moisture will push dew points into the tropical 70s across Minnesota this weekend.
That should push heat index values toward 100 degrees in parts of southern Minnesota by Sunday afternoon. If you’ve been pining for summer heat and humidity, this is your weekend.
