In the hours after the horrific shootings of two state lawmakers, unsubstantiated theories began to spread across social media.

The theories were being pushed by prominent conservative politicians and influencers, according to Madison Czopek, a writer for PolitiFact. Many of the theories centered around Governor Tim Walz.

Czopek fact-checked the claims and found them to be largely false and misleading.

While breaking news situations can bring a lot of uncertainty, Czopek said it’s best to take a beat and take stock before making assumptions.

“Slow down before you share anything and consider what is the source of this information,” she said. “Turn to trusted news sources as much as possible.”
